Role Overview: Legal Officers (Assistant Manager & Deputy Manager)

The State Bank of India (SBI) is inviting applications from qualified and ambitious legal professionals for the positions of Assistant Manager (Law) and Deputy Manager (Law) on a Regular Basis. This is a premier opportunity to join India’s largest public sector bank and lead critical legal operations, mitigate corporate risks, and navigate complex financial frameworks.

As part of SBI's specialized legal team, selected officers will handle diverse responsibilities, including drafting and vetting corporate agreements, advising on constitutional and financial sector laws, managing litigations, and ensuring regulatory compliance across bank operations.

Core Responsibilities & Key Result Areas (KRAs)

Selected candidates will be responsible for managing and mitigating legal risks for the bank, handling litigations, and ensuring operational compliance. The primary duties include:

  • Legal Opinions & Risk Mitigation: Offering expert legal advice and opinions on various banking and operational issues. You will support operational teams in identifying and mitigating structural legal risks in contracts, negotiations, deals, and large-scale projects.

  • Drafting & Vetting Documents: Reviewing, negotiating, drafting, and vetting critical commercial agreements, corporate contracts, deeds, and various official legal documentation.

  • Litigation Management: Managing and conducting the bank's litigation. This includes instructing external advocates, coordinating with legal professionals, and personally attending judicial or quasi-judicial forums whenever required.

  • Regulatory & Statutory Coordination: Acting as a bridge between the bank and external authorities. This involves coordinating with statutory bodies, regulatory authorities, and self-governing entities on matters involving complex legal aspects.

  • Property Title Investigation: Conducting thorough title investigations of properties and handling related legal matters, particularly if posted in specialized units dedicated to corporate or retail loans and advances.

  • Knowledge Dissemination: Staying continuously updated on the latest legal developments, judgments, and statutory amendments, and actively sharing this knowledge with operational functionaries to safeguard the bank's interests.

  • General Assignments: Executing any other legal work, roles, activities, or responsibilities assigned by the Bank from time to time based on corporate requirements.

Skills & Requirements

1. Educational Qualifications

  • Mandatory: Graduate with a degree in Law (3-year LLB or 5-year integrated LLB) from a recognized university in India.

  • Preferred: Candidates who have completed a 5-year integrated law course may be given preference during shortlisting.

2. Bar Council Enrollment & Professional Experience

  • Mandatory Status: Law graduates must be actively enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council.

  • Assistant Manager (Law) Experience: Minimum 2 years of active post-enrollment experience as a practicing advocate, a Law Officer in the Legal Department of a Scheduled Commercial Bank, or a combination of both.

  • Deputy Manager (Law) Experience: Minimum 4 years of active post-enrollment experience as a practicing advocate, a Law Officer in the Legal Department of a Scheduled Commercial Bank, or a combination of both.

  • Note: Internships, teaching, and academic training experience will not be counted toward professional eligibility.

3. Financial & Credit Integrity

  • Clean Credit Record: Candidates must have a clean credit and financial history. Individuals who have defaulted on any bank loans, NBFC credit arrangements, or credit card dues, or those with an adverse CIBIL report, are ineligible unless the outstanding dues are fully regularized/repaid with a "No Dues Certificate" prior to joining.

Selected candidates will receive an attractive starting basic pay along with regular increments:

  • Assistant Manager (Law) – JMGS-I:

    • Pay Scale: Basic Pay of ₹48,480 with structured annual increments reaching up to ₹85,920.

  • Deputy Manager (Law) – MMGS-II:

    • Pay Scale: Basic Pay of ₹64,820 with structured annual increments reaching up to ₹93,960.

What are the registration dates for the SBI Specialist Cadre Officers (Law) recruitment?

The online registration of applications and payment of fees is open from June 24, 2026, to July 14, 2026.

Can I apply for both the Assistant Manager (Law) and Deputy Manager (Law) positions?

No. Candidates are not allowed to apply for more than one post. If multiple applications are submitted, only the last valid, completed registration will be retained, and any other application fees paid will be forfeited.

What is the educational qualification required for these legal roles?

As of the cut-off date (May 31, 2026), candidates for Assistant Manager (Law) must be between 25 and 32 years old. Candidates for Deputy Manager (Law) must be between 25 and 35 years old. These maximum age limits apply to Unreserved category candidates; relaxations apply to reserved categories as per Government guidelines.

What is the selection process for these roles?

The selection process consists of an Online Written Examination (comprising both Objective and Descriptive type tests) tentatively scheduled for August 2026, followed by a Personal Interview. The final merit list is prepared using a normalized 70:30 weightage split between the Written Test and Interview.

Is there negative marking in the online written examination?

No. There will be no negative marks for wrong answers in the Online Written Examination.

What is the application fee for the recruitment?

The application fee and intimation charges are ₹750 for General, EWS, and OBC candidates. There is no fee or intimation charge for SC, ST, and PwBD candidates.

Are candidates with a history of loan default eligible to apply?

Candidates who have defaulted on repayments with Banks, NBFCs, or credit card arrangements and have not regularized their accounts by the date of the recruitment offer letter are not eligible. Candidates must either have their CIBIL status updated or produce a 'No Dues Certificate' from the lender showing no outstanding balance in adversely reflected accounts.

Are outstation candidates reimbursed for travel expenses to attend the interview?

Yes. Shortlisted outstation candidates called for an interview will be reimbursed for the actual cost of an economy class domestic airfare up to a maximum of ₹10,000 (to-and-fro), subject to submitting original or copies of flight tickets, invoices, and boarding passes.
