Role Overview

Core Objective

As a commissioned officer in the rank of Sub Lieutenant, your primary role is to lead, manage, and operate the advanced technological, strategic, and tactical infrastructure of the Indian Navy. You will maintain maritime security, protect India’s sovereign waters, and ensure the operational readiness of naval forces.

⚓ Responsibilities by Branch

1. Executive Branch

This is the frontline command and operational arm of the Navy. Responsibilities include:

  • General Service (GS) / Hydro: Commanding naval warships, managing shipboard weapons, and executing hydrographic surveys to map the oceans.

  • Pilot & Observer (NAOO): Flying naval combat or surveillance aircraft, operating airborne electronic systems, and handling maritime reconnaissance missions.

  • Air Traffic Control (ATC): Controlling and directing military aircraft operations on airbases and aircraft carrier flight decks.

  • Logistics: Managing supply chains, material management, and financial logistics to keep naval operations smoothly funded and equipped.

  • NAIC: Inspecting, testing, and maintaining the safety and quality standards of naval armaments and ammunition.

2. Technical Branch (Engineering & Electrical)

This branch acts as the technical backbone responsible for complex naval machinery and systems. Responsibilities include:

  • Marine & Submarine Engineering: Operating and maintaining highly advanced propulsion systems, nuclear or diesel power plants, and structural integrity onboard surface ships and submarines.

  • Electrical & Electronics: Overseeing sophisticated radar, weapon control systems, satellite communications, and power generation distribution networks across naval platforms.

  • Naval Constructor: Designing, constructing, and repairing warships and submarines at major naval dockyards.

3. Education Branch

This branch drives the training and intellectual advancement of the naval force. Responsibilities include:

  • Educating officers and cadets in advanced engineering, scientific, and strategic disciplines.

  • Managing training programs and curriculum development at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) or other specialized schools.

  • High Starting Salary: Officers are inducted directly in the rank of Sub Lieutenant with an initial gross salary starting from approximately Rs. 1,20,000/- per month.

Location

1. Training Location

Initially, all selected candidates will report to Ezhimala, Kerala. The initial basic and specialized training will be conducted at the Indian Naval Academy (INA) located there.

2. Job Deployment & Postings

As commissioned officers in the Indian Navy, the final work location is not fixed to a single city. Once initial training is successfully completed, deployment is dynamic and based on service requirements:

  • Onboard Ships & Submarines: Candidates selected for Technical, Engineering, Electrical, or Executive branches (like General Service or Submarine arms) will serve on naval warships, operational bases, or submarines at sea.

  • Naval Air Stations: Candidates joining as Pilots, Observers, or Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) will primarily be stationed at various military airbases and naval air stations across India.

  • Naval Establishments: Those entering the Education, Logistics, or Naval Constructor cadres will work out of major naval dockyards, headquarters, commands, and training establishments across coastal and metropolitan regions (such as Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, and New Delhi).

Educational Qualification

  • Minimum Marks: Most branches require a minimum of 60% marks in your qualifying degree (or a "First Class" designation).

  • Class 10 & 12 Requirements: For several entries (Pilot, Observer, ATC, and Education), candidates must have scored an aggregate of at least 60% in both Class 10 and Class 12, along with a minimum of 60% marks in English in either Class 10 or 12.

  • Final Year Students: You can apply if you are in your final year, but you must clear all exams and submit proof of your degree with 60% marks before joining in June 2027. No active backlogs are allowed at the time of your SSB interview.
